Top 5 amazing things!

This past week, I’ve been amazed. Amazed by many, many things:

1. I’m still standing.

Lord Braxton has not managed to get me into bed and I couldn’t be happier. I’ve had continuous daily practice contractions since week 21 and considering I’m now week 35, that’s basically 4 months of uterine work outs. I should have a six pack by now. I’ve never continuously worked out for that long in my life.I thought I would have been put on bed rest years ago so every day I am still standing is pure joy. With Bubba I got Braxton Hicks one week and was put on bed rest the next so I assumed I would have ended up between the sheets a long time ago.

Bed rest is one of those things that always sounds better than it is, sure for the first few days catching up with Real Housewives is nice but after that it is just boring and frustrating. I’m still a fairly productive member of society and all of Sweden is happy about that. I’m amazed.

2. My iPhone was stolen.

Last week I was standing on a crowded platform on the tube, going home from work, my hands full of things. A creepy looking guy was standing to my left, really close to me and I literally had the thought ‘Did that guy just steal my phone? It’s in the front pocket, I should check’. Do you think I checked? Do you think I followed my gut instinct? Or do you think I waited 20 minutes and then decided to check the weather forecast only to find out that indeed, yes, he had stolen it. Bastard.

I’m amazed at two things about this event that 1) someone had the audacity to steal from a tired looking 8 month pregnant women and that 2) I basically saw him do it but didn’t react. Motherhood has indeed taught me that your gut instinct is always correct, it’s something I talk about quite a bit. But obviously expensive phones with a 2 year sign up plan are exempt from my follow your gut policy.

3. Swedish weather can be crap. Now this is not amazing news, the amazing bit is just how crap it can be. Last weekend when I was meant to be out and about eating from 25 different Stockholm restaurants, it rained, howled and poured. I starved. It was about 6°, the coldest June day in 84 years, it was colder and windier than it was at Christmas. Yes the Christmas that we have in the middle of winter. Since then I’ve seen, the sun on and off and some days I can leave the house without Wellingtons. Next weekend is ‘midsummer’ – if this is the middle of summer Sweden, kill me now.

4. My daughter only speaks Swedish and it doesn’t bother me. Every day there is a new word springing out the mouth of my 23 month old daughter. And it’s always a Swedish word. I’d thought that this would bother me but in fact, I’m only proud of her. Of course it would be natural for her to only speak in Swedish considering that is all she hears all day. She does say English words too but with every day that arrives, the Swedish takes over. She does, however perfectly understand English. And it’s very obvious that she does understand everything, like when I get her to make me a cup of tea in the mornings, one sugar and milk, she does it perfectly. She amazes me.

5. Our family photo session actually worked. On Swedish Mother’s Day, we hired a photographer to take a few snaps of the Hubba, the Bubba and the Bump. It was practically the only day the sun was shining and the whole shoot was lots of fun. Bubba was in top form and the photographer we picked captured the moment brilliantly. I’m amazed at how good they came out, I couldn’t be happier! It nearly makes up for the phone.

Do you follow your gut or do you just let people steal things from you?

Have you been amazed by anything lately?

  1. Once that baby is born, reveal that 6-pack! I’m sure bed rest isn’t as good as it sounds. Happy you didn’t have to endure it. So just 3 weeks away huh? Whoa! Sorry about your iPhone. What a mean-ie to steal from a pregnant woman! How did he know you didn’t bite ;). Did you replace it? And hope you’ll share some family portraits with us!

I used to take the train a lot too. I wouldn’t be afraid to take 2 steps away from someone shady, or smelly ;). When I walk from the gym to my car at night, I’m like a madman because I not only dart to the car, I am looking left and right, back and front, left and right, always on the lookout. I look crazy but whatever. Oprah says people don’t like to bother/rob crazy people ;).

    Nothing spectacularly amazing here…

    • I like your Be A Crazy Person strategy, although some might argue that I already tried it and it obviously didn’t work.
No phone yet, it should arrive in about 8 days, lucky I am not about to go into labour and might need to contact the hubba! I should have biten him!!!!!

  2. Loved your list, even if it was not all positive things. Life is always surprising. Speaking of stealing. When I was still living in New York I was on my way to work at 7 in the morning, down the same street I always walk down. There are normally a few people walking to and from the train. Sure enough two pass me by just to double back and rip my ipod out of my hand and push me away. What did I do- I RAN after him (forgetting that there were two men, and one of them was behind me). for THREE blocks, screaming. Finally I collapsed on the floor and called the police. Looking back on it, it was not the smartest thing to do. Sometimes its just not worth it.

    • That’s a cool story, I’m impressed by you running after them!!!!! I just stood there looking dazed and wondered if anyone would stand up and give me a seat on the train.

Well weren’t they ‘up early and bright’ robbers? It’s not the thing you would expect at 7am!!!

      • I just don’t know what I would have done if I caught up? lol Apparently they were robbing young girls every morning in the neighborhood for two weeks-was in the news. Never got caught though.

I can’t believe someone would rob from a woman 8 months pregnant- thats disgusting.

  3. I thought they stole stuff that brazenly only in New York City. I guess there are scum bags the world over.

I think your instincts were telling you that anyone who could steal so brazenly might be a threat to your self, and your baby, if you caught him in the act.

    June 14, 2012
    • Yes, maybe you are right! I mean what would I actually do if I had confronted him? I can’t really run after him as I can’t really run at all these days!

Surely Lord Braxton and the Swedish weather could have combined forces to take on the scum-bag? A similar thing happened to Dad and our neighbour in Rome…both had wallets stolen from their front trouser pockets, and like you, they pretty much watched the robbers steal them as they were gob-smacked with the audacity of these people. Grrrr….where’s that devoted rotweiler when you need it?

    • That would be something, me walking around Stockers with a protection dog!

Sorry your phone was stolen. My neighbor just had her iphone and purse stolen from her car in the school parking lot of all places! There is a special place for people who steal from pregnant women and it’s not a good place.

Nice that everything cooperated for your pictures, though!

    June 15, 2012
    • Oh the school parking lot, that’s just charming as well! Nice people…
