Top 5 amazing things!
This past week, I’ve been amazed. Amazed by many, many things:
1. I’m still standing.
Lord Braxton has not managed to get me into bed and I couldn’t be happier. I’ve had continuous daily practice contractions since week 21 and considering I’m now week 35, that’s basically 4 months of uterine work outs. I should have a six pack by now. I’ve never continuously worked out for that long in my life.I thought I would have been put on bed rest years ago so every day I am still standing is pure joy. With Bubba I got Braxton Hicks one week and was put on bed rest the next so I assumed I would have ended up between the sheets a long time ago.
Bed rest is one of those things that always sounds better than it is, sure for the first few days catching up with Real Housewives is nice but after that it is just boring and frustrating. I’m still a fairly productive member of society and all of Sweden is happy about that. I’m amazed.
2. My iPhone was stolen.
Last week I was standing on a crowded platform on the tube, going home from work, my hands full of things. A creepy looking guy was standing to my left, really close to me and I literally had the thought ‘Did that guy just steal my phone? It’s in the front pocket, I should check’. Do you think I checked? Do you think I followed my gut instinct? Or do you think I waited 20 minutes and then decided to check the weather forecast only to find out that indeed, yes, he had stolen it. Bastard.
I’m amazed at two things about this event that 1) someone had the audacity to steal from a tired looking 8 month pregnant women and that 2) I basically saw him do it but didn’t react. Motherhood has indeed taught me that your gut instinct is always correct, it’s something I talk about quite a bit. But obviously expensive phones with a 2 year sign up plan are exempt from my follow your gut policy.
3. Swedish weather can be crap. Now this is not amazing news, the amazing bit is just how crap it can be. Last weekend when I was meant to be out and about eating from 25 different Stockholm restaurants, it rained, howled and poured. I starved. It was about 6°, the coldest June day in 84 years, it was colder and windier than it was at Christmas. Yes the Christmas that we have in the middle of winter. Since then I’ve seen, the sun on and off and some days I can leave the house without Wellingtons. Next weekend is ‘midsummer’ – if this is the middle of summer Sweden, kill me now.
4. My daughter only speaks Swedish and it doesn’t bother me. Every day there is a new word springing out the mouth of my 23 month old daughter. And it’s always a Swedish word. I’d thought that this would bother me but in fact, I’m only proud of her. Of course it would be natural for her to only speak in Swedish considering that is all she hears all day. She does say English words too but with every day that arrives, the Swedish takes over. She does, however perfectly understand English. And it’s very obvious that she does understand everything, like when I get her to make me a cup of tea in the mornings, one sugar and milk, she does it perfectly. She amazes me.
5. Our family photo session actually worked. On Swedish Mother’s Day, we hired a photographer to take a few snaps of the Hubba, the Bubba and the Bump. It was practically the only day the sun was shining and the whole shoot was lots of fun. Bubba was in top form and the photographer we picked captured the moment brilliantly. I’m amazed at how good they came out, I couldn’t be happier! It nearly makes up for the phone.
Do you follow your gut or do you just let people steal things from you?
