Snow Change

“The secret of change is to focus all of your energy, not on fighting the old, but on building the new.”

Socrates

Just a few weeks ago, at the end of a long and tiresome week, I opened the door to us moving back to Sweden. I must have been very tired.

Due to financial reasons, we decided that TSH could look for work in Stockholm, as long as he kept looking for a job in Sydney. Sweden has a higher unemployment rate than Australia, so I thought we’d have some time up our thermal sleeves.

THE NEXT DAY, he received a tip about a job that he would be suited to and qualified for. WELL THAT WASN’T IN MY PLAN NOW WAS IT.

He read the job description and thought it sounded interesting. BUM. He thought he’d apply. DOUBLE BUM.

He applied and a few days later, we found out he got an interview.

The stars were all aligning, but they were not forming the southern cross.

Our family cabins in the north of Sweden. We’ll be seeing you soon.

Things were getting serious. I asked my new boss if I could keep my job, but live and work in Sweden. A country on the other side of the planet. He said, ‘sure’.

WHO SAYS THAT? WHAT FOOL OF A MAN ARE YOU TO ALLOW ME TO KEEP THE JOB I LOVE BUT DO IT FROM THE NORTH POLE? YOU WERE MEANT TO SAY NO.

Did the interview process drag out for weeks, with multiple rounds and checkpoints you normally go through when applying for a job in Sweden, land of laws and red tape? COURSE IT DIDN’T. HE FOUND OUT HE GOT THE JOB A WEEK LATER.

Whirlwind. From ‘just maybe, maybe you can take a look at job ads in Stockholm in a half-arsed kind of way’ to ‘congratulations, a job you could apply for fell into your lap, then you got it straight away’. Spinning head. Spinning heart.

Now I’m no Greek philosopher – although I did once own a cat called Aristotle –  But I am listening to the advice of Socrates and I’m now focusing my energy on not fighting the old, (because I tried that and it didn’t work) but on building the new. With triple glaze windows and floor heating. We’ve moving to Stockholm, 01.01.2017. Snow change!

This is where we are moving to. This is an actual picture when I was trying to dig my way out of our former apartment in Stockholm.

    • Oh yes, we need to konmari like mad! We don’t want to ship too much stuff so most of it is going to friends or charity… I’d love a dog called Socrates and I’ve been promised we can get one if I moved! ha ha

  3. Because I’ve only just read your blog post arrival in Australia it feels like you’ve been here for weeks. I remember a blog post about you trying to get to childcare centre in the snow and it doesn’t seem that long ago…

    • I know, we haven’t been here overly long, nearly 2.5 years (!) we thought we would have been able to work but it just hasn’t panned out…

  4. The good news is you have a lot less stuff to lug back across the world since you Kon-marie’d it. I have never and I mean never heard of anyone getting a prime job in a week. I guess you just can’t fight fate?

You’ve got a lot more to complain about in Sweden so that might make your blog funnier (looking on the bright side for you, I’m so helpful!)

    • I certainly have a lot to complain about in Sweden, prepare for a rich bed of sarcastic content coming up!
